Costs of Cremation
5 september 2016
Vraag nummer: 47225
Dear Willem,
Our sister suddenly passed away on 11 August 2016. She was a Dutch citizen that stayed in the Netherlands for 40 years. She died alone and had no children. Her brother lives in South Africa and her sister lives in the UK.
She had no insurance and it seems the Bijzondere Hulpverlening of Den Haag arranged the cremation.
We have attended the cremation service to show our last respect.
The funeral parlor have sent the account for the cremation to our sister in the UK.
Who must pay this account?
Thank you
Antwoord:
Dear Sir,
The heirs have to pay the cost of the funeral. The brother in South Africa and the sister in the UK are both heirs.
'Bijzondere Hulpverlening' of Den Haag helps people without regard of their nationality or origin. The municipality of Den Haag is legaly entitled to recover the costs. The domicile or nationality of the heirs is not relevant.
Kind regards,
mr W.G.H.M. van der Putten
